Lippes Mathias is pleased to share that John J. Flynn, partner and leader of the firm’s municipal law practice team, has been honored with the Liberty Bell Award at the Bar Association of Erie County’s 2024 Law Day Luncheon. The purpose of the Liberty Bell Award is to recognize the community service that has strengthened the American system of freedom under the law, and to accord public recognition for outstanding service in one of the following areas:

  1. Promotion of a better understanding of our Constitution and the Bill of Rights
  2. Encouragement of a greater respect for the law and the courts
  3. Stimulation of a deeper sense of individual responsibility so that citizens recognize their duties as well as their rights
  4. Contribution to the effective functioning of our institutions of government
  5. Fostering a better understanding and appreciation of the rule of law

Flynn was selected for this award in recognition of his dedicated service to the legal community as the Erie County district attorney over the last seven years, where he created an atmosphere of community engagement and openness and coordinated with his Community Outreach Team to provide meals, work on housing projects, and clean up streets and vacant lots. He was also selected because he prioritized open communication with local media and community groups, ensuring that the citizens of Erie County had opportunities to learn more about the office and the criminal justice system.

At the Law Day Luncheon Flynn was also presented with a City of Buffalo Executive Chamber Proclamation in which City of Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown proclaimed April 23, 2024, as “John J. Flynn, Jr. Day.”

John J. Flynn has occupied a multitude of public service roles that directly translate to his knowledge of municipal law and representation of clients. Before joining Lippes Mathias, Flynn served nearly two terms as Erie County district attorney, prosecuting virtually every crime committed in Erie County, including the prosecution of misdemeanor cases in the city, town, and village courts; the prosecution of felony cases in State Supreme Court and Erie County Court; and the prosecution of cases in several specialty courts. Prior to being elected as Erie County district attorney, Flynn also served as an assistant district attorney, acting Buffalo City Court judge, town justice in the Town of Tonawanda, Tonawanda town attorney, and as a member of the Tonawanda Town Board. Flynn’s record as a public servant, in which he forged many lasting relationships, is emblematic of his ability to counsel clients of the firm on nearly all matters that fall within the sphere of municipal law.
